Recently I wrote an opinion piece in which I suggested that the reasons Jon Lovitz gave for his fisticuffs with Andy Dick lent him total justification. This article followed not long after an article took the movie Colour Me Kubrick as a starting point for an examination of the cult of celebrity and our continuing need to trust the words of famous people. What goes around...

The day after my article on Jon Lovitz went live I received an email from someone claiming to be Jon Lovitz:

Believe it or not, this is Jon Lovitz. I read your article and appreciate your support. I just think you should know one thing. I was never, ever close friends with Andy Dick, ever. I have never even had his phone number. I never hung out with him socially in any way, shape or form. I only knew him from NewsRadio and from the moment I got on NewsRadio, he was giving me [crap] for being there. I asked him once, why was he acting this way. I was nothing but supportive of him and gave him jokes to do and said I thought he was funny and talented. At this point the email made reference to some of the allegations regarding Andy Dick, Phil Hartman's wife and drugs that I earlier wrote justified Lovitz's reaction. And then:

Kelly Keltner, many thanks for your stellar kudos. All my advice basically comes from my cynic's world view, i.e. don't worry; whatever problems you have will all work out when you're dead.

I just wrote an article about this topic! I think I used the name Jon Lovitz a bazillion times...

Great work as always, Tim.

How did he get YOUR phone number...?

Interesting article. However, I don't like John Lovitz or Andy Dick.

Yes, he contacted me. Yeah, yeah, that's the ticket!

That being said: Ed Druckman's advice is stellar. You might get a real interview out of it. :)

Jennifer Claerr: Timothy never said that Jon gave him his phone number. In the article, he stated that Jon (or non-Jon - whatever) emailed asking Timothy for a phone number at which he could reach him. Timothy obviously tried to reroute the number from where he received the call, but he never stated in the article that he was "given" a number by this person.

Hi Jennifer Claerr. I would've thought the same thing myself, but you'd be amazed at who you can meet over the internet. I'm not going to name any names and get myself in trouble, but I've developed close relationships with several people through e-mails they have sent me for things I've written elsewhere.

That's really cool... now is that him commenting!?

I'm Jon Lovitz, so I'm really getting a kick out of some of these comments.

I think it was him. Living in Hollywood, you would be surprised what normal celebrities do. It is only the diva's that want you to bow (literally) in their presence.

Although I would really love to tell you that you had a genuine encounter with a celebrity, I have to say that it's much more likely that you encountered a wacko. You're absolutely right; a celebrity has no reason to give out his personal telephone number to an AC journalist, or to send them email. I'll bet this is just some yahoo who's trying to get high off of celebrity glue. You might want to warn the real Jon Lovitz that somebody's impersonating him.

Carol Gilbert is correct. Simply call up SAG or the WGAw, since J. Lovitz is also a scribe and ask for his agent of record. Then call up the 10%-er representing J. Lovitz. You'll get his assistant, which is cool-o-mundo. Explain the sit. Then ask how you could confirm this. You'll be surpised at how helpful they may be. You may even be able to set up a gab fest with the real J. Lovitz; or if it was indeed the real J. Lovitz who dingled you, talk to him again. Great piece.
