According to a recent hawaii.gov press release, Hawaii Governor Linda Lingle has announced a $4,391,300 grant from the state to build a six-classroom building at Na'alehu Elementary and Intermediate School on the Big Island, aka The Island of Hawai'i. The building's original two buildings were built back in 1928 and 1939.

The school building project will be completed in two phases. The first phase of building will include the construction of two main classrooms in the building. One will be a computer center and the other will be a special education classroom. This building will also feature a faculty center, restroom facilities, and a custodial or janitor closet. There will also be a mechanical, electrical, and communications room in this specific building.

The second phase will feature the construction of a brand new science classroom and an additional classroom, equipped with state-of-the-art school technology. There will also be a special education office for teachers and school workers and a student support and an educational assistant office.

Hawaii Governor Linda Lingle said about the construction of the elementary school, "My Administration remains committed to supporting projects that will improve educational resources in Hawai'i schools...Na'alehu Elementary & Intermediate School is an older facility that needs to be expanded and modernized for the benefit of students and staff."

Former Hawaii Island resident Tamari Igushi, said, "School is a huge deal back in Hawaii. The state really focuses on getting children of all ages to stay in school. Hawaii is also making it better for children and teachers by putting more money into their school systems. Hawaii wants to show how important education is to them and their residents, no matter where in Hawaii a public school is."
