On news shows the public is often informed of the high cost of medical care. It's true that individuals often have little or no control over the cost of their insurance premiums; some people pay their entire premiums themselves while others pay the portion required by their employers. In either circumstance, the individual must pay the rates ascribed to them by the medical insurer in order to maintain coverage.

Consumers can, nonetheless, take some steps to contain their out of pocket medical expenses. Certainly, individuals should place their health above their budgetary concerns. No one should avoid seeking necessary treatment just because their out of pocket expenses are too high. However, little changes in how an individual manages his care can save him a hefty amount over time.

The first, and possibly most recommended, way to save money on out of pocket medical expenses is the use of generic products. Many people know that their doctor can prescribe generic drugs or simply indicate on the written prescription that a pharmacist may fill the prescription with a generic version of a drug if one is available. A proactive patient may ask the doctor specifically if a generic drug is suitable for them before ever leaving the doctor's office.

Simply switching from a name brand drug to a generic drug may seem like a small detail. Upon closer inspection however, one realizes that a popular Blue Cross Blue Shield plan requires a five dollar co-pay for a generic drug or a twenty-five dollar co-pay for a name brand drug. Although a twenty dollar savings may seem comparably small when considering out of pocket medical expenses, an individual who is taking at least one medicine each month can save almost two hundred and fifty dollar each year. Perhaps that simple switch from name brand to generic isn't so small after all.

Takeaways
  • Use generic products whenever it is possible.
  • See medical providers who are in your insurance company's approved network.
  • Understand the benefits provided by your insurance plan.
