Try to bring an experienced friend, in order to help you master all the parts of your boat. Only sail when the forecast calls for sunny skies, if at all possible. Bring a first aid kit and plenty of supplies to eat or drink, just in case the weather gets bad. Notify a few people about your sailing plans and when you plan to return. This way, someone can call the Coast Guard to rescue, if something has gone wrong and you haven't returned.
Always wear your life jacket and research the area you plan visit, just in case the water isn't deep enough. Make your boat is well maintained, before you head out on an adventure that will test the boats endurance. Also, learn how to fix minor problems that you may encounter, while out on the open sea. However, you must beware of the rules of the water ways that you plan to visit. Try to watch your speed and keep an eye out for other boaters, while respecting all marine life.
There is absolutely no way, for you to be sure that your sailing trip will go as planned. But, you can be prepared and ready, long before you shove off. Make sure you have a life jacket for each member on the boat, a life raft or a life boat, and an emergency kit with plenty of flares. Be sure that everyone knows, exactly how to use the emergency kit. Also, be sure everyone has life jackets and deck shoes at all times, when on the boat.
