Weight
One of the biggest disadvantages of a standing calf machine is the weight. All of them are extremely bulky and heavy. Most of them weigh more than 500 pounds. This excess weight also reduces their portability. Because they're so hard to move around, they are mostly only used in gyms. In addition to the weight, a standing calf machine may also be uncomfortable to use.
Comfort
Comfort is another disadvantage of a standing calf machine. These machines have a tendency to hurt your shoulders while using them. Some people even break blood vessels in their shoulders while using them. Also, a standing calf machine is designed to exercise both of your calves at the same time which can be uncomfortable. If you decide to do them individually instead, you can put excess strain on your spine and lower back.
Bending
You are supposed to stretch and contract fully when you're exercising your calves. Unfortunately, a standing calf machine allows you to bend your knees and reduce the effectiveness of the exercise. When you don't fully extend the calf muscle and Achilles' tendon, you may increase your chance of developing future injuries in the area. Besides allowing you to bend your knees, you are also allowed to bounce the weights.
Bouncing
One of the last disadvantages of a standing calf machine is the user's tendency to bounce the weights. After exercising for a while, you will inevitably begin to tire out. Some people have the tendency to bounce the weights after using the standing calf machine for a while. This also reduces the effectiveness of the exercise and may result in injury.
