Easy Decorating Ideas for Kids Rooms: When They Outgrow the Cartoon Murals

When I painted the murals for my kids rooms they were small, but they are not so small anymore. These days designs for big kid's rooms are the main topic of conversation around my house. If you are reading this, then they are the topic of conversation around your house too. Here are some ideas we have come up with:

Big kids room idea: Comfy Sweater design

Pick a favorite sweater with a fun design and recreate it on your walls. It can be as simple as a series of stripes going around the room, or an argyle pattern. It may sound difficult, but if you break up the design into simple shapes and purchase some paint tape, you will be finished in a matter of hours.

Big kids room idea: Night Sky design

This room design consists of having a dark ceiling and light walls in different hues of the same color, with glowing stars added to the ceiling. This works best with light blue walls and midnight blue ceiling, or lavender walls and a very dark purple ceiling.

Big kids room idea: High Tech design

For the child who likes straight lines and technology, you can paint the walls in a silver gray color. If you have a child asking for black, you may be able to use this scheme and adding black trim, a single black wall, or a black ceiling. Modern furniture with black or silver metal legs goes well in this environment.

Big kids room idea: Movie Star design

For this design, you may want to incorporate a wall of mirrors and makeup mirror lights. Paint the room in bubble gum pink, fuchsia, or bright purple. Pick up several corkboards and paint the frames of them in a contrasting color. Install the corkboards on the walls slightly askew and add magazine pictures of your kid's favorite movie and singing stars.

Big kids room idea: School Spirit

For this idea, paint your kids room in the colors of their school. You may want to use the colors for accents, or if you really love the colors the whole room. Add school flags and bumpers stickers (with thumbtacks) and other school paraphernalia to the walls in the room.
