The Met is the museum for the most powerful city on the face of the planet. That alone gives it great respect and attraction in the industry. Also there are so many other museums in the local area that a trip to the Met could turn into a month long tour of some of the finest museums in America and the world.
The Guggenheim in Bilbao, Spain
The Guggenheim was designed in the late 20th century and is so unique, a visitor will not forget it once you have visited the museum. This museum, along with the surrounding Bilbao area will give you a section of Spanish culture that is unlike anything in the Madrid and Barcelona parts of the country.
The Vatican Museums in Rome
The great architecture of the building itself draws in viewers from around the globe. Bernini's spiral columns and the giant dome by Michaelangelo can stop visitors in their tracks. There are 22 different collections with something for everyone's tastes.
The British Museum in London
Besides being in London, the British Museum boasts over 4 million displayed artifacts, numerous miles of hallways in the building, which are traveled by over 5 million visitors each year. There are places to sleep there as well as a featured section on Egyptian culture and history. The Great Reading Room is definitely a spot to marvel.
The Smithsonian in Washington, D.C.
This may be the finest collection in the United States. The shear mass of displays and significant items can be overwhelming, but the advice from the staff is to "pick a theme and stick to it," instead of wandering aimlessly. Some of the most significant pieces of American history reside in this one facility, take your time discovering all this museum has to offer.
The Museum of Modern Art in New York City
This is one of the most current facilities in the United States and the world. Both its architecture and displays show a progressive quality that can only be appreciated. This museum really took off in terms of popularity after World War II.
The Tates in London
The Met is one of the most pictureque museums in the world.
