Acupuncture involves the stimulation of specific points on the body in order to relieve various health conditions. This process is also beneficial to horses. There are several methods of equine acupuncture. Some of them include electro-acupuncture, moxibustion, laser, and aquapuncture. This article will discuss five methods of equine acupuncture.
Needling
When most people think of acupuncture, they think of needles. Needles are also one of the methods of equine acupuncture. These metal needles are inserted into the acupuncture point and left in for 20 to 30 minutes. Using needles is the most effective and safest form of acupuncture.
Electro-acupuncture
Another method of equine acupuncture is electro-acupuncture. This method also makes use of small, metal needles, but also uses electricity. After the needles are inserted, they are connected to an electrical stimulator. This stimulator delivers pulsing electrical currents between two or more needles to enhance the treatment of equine acupuncture.
Moxibustion
Moxibustion is the next method of equine acupuncture. Moxa is a Chinese herb that is used to apply heat to an acupuncture point. It is rolled into a stick and lit up. It is then held over various areas of the body. Moxa can also be placed onto the handle of an acupuncture needle. This allows deeper penetration of the heat.
Laser
A less time consuming method of equine acupuncture uses lasers. These lasers provide a beam of light to stimulate acupuncture points. The light only needs to stay on each point for a few seconds to be effective, whereas the needles need to be applied for 20 minutes. The use of a laser also avoids the discomfort associated with the use of needles for equine acupuncture.
Aquapuncture
Aquapuncture is one of the last methods of equine acupuncture. During this process, fluids are injected in order to stimulate the acupuncture points. Common fluids that are injected include antibiotics, saline, and vitamins. These fluids effectively produce stimulation several days after treatment with equine acupuncture.
