Those who seek pen pals on death row might want to write to Spencer Brasure. Brasure is one of the many death row inmates that the web site, Canadian Citizens Against the Death Penalty has decided to feature on there "pen pals" page.

It is ironic that one of the large headlined pleas in this web site are "Stop the Torture." They feel that the death sentence is murder and that these poor souls are victims of our society. Some of the death row inmates have web pages where their art and poetry or incoherent ramblings are displayed, along with their photos. Some of the less talented, simply have their name and a request to "reach out" to the outside world. After all, life on Death Row is not pleasant.

Some states feel they have the right to do this; to contact people on the outside and tell them their sob stories, as well as ask for money. Some states, such as Florida, have banned death row inmates from such contact, in the interest of protecting the unsuspecting public.

I never heard of Spencer Brasure until I wrote this article. Probably many people haven't heard of him or the crime he committed to get him sent to Death Row. The web site never lists the crimes of their adopted victims. None of the inmates express remorse or admit guilt. They are all innocent and the murderers are those who have sentenced them to death.

Let me tell you a little about the poor, unfortunate Mr. Brasure. On September 6, 1996, the twenty-eight year old Brasure and an accomplice, Billy Davis, met up with former child actor Anthony Guest at a hotel in Hawthorne, California. Guest was scheduled to walk his sister down the aisle for her wedding two weeks later. Why he met up with Brasure and Davis is still a mystery, but whatever the circumstances, he certainly didn't deserve what happened to him in that room.

Guest was hog tied by both of the men and repeatedly zapped with a cattle prod. He was gagged after being forced to eat glass and having a broken beer bottle shoved down his throat and his mouth taped shut. The two men took turns bashing Guest in the head and electrocuting him with the electric prod.

Did You Know?
I feel that people who want to write to Death Row inmates should know a little bit about the crimes the inmates are convicted of prior to forming a pen-pal relationship with them.

I know Spencer personally, and also know that this was a drug binge gone way bad.

It's amazing how there is no mention of the horrific drug binges that went on, yes major ones among all of them. It's amazing how no sleep for days can distort and confuse the brain severly.

Anthony 'Tony' Guest had a bit part on the Boston based series Spenser: For Hire. This crime was committed during the aftermath of OJ and the L.A. riots. In the town where he grew up in, none of the circumstances of the murder were known due to lack of national coverage. This crime was so disgusting, i do not think it has been chronicled in any of the sensationalistic shows like 'City Confidential' and since the criminals were caught so swiftly, no press on shows like America's most wanted.

Death Row inmates in Florida are allowed to recieve mail and have contact with the outside world how ever no inmate from Florida can advertise for pen pals if found to have ads on the net up the inmate is locked down. and just one case against the death penalty even in this case is: it costs on average $2.3 millon for a death penalty case which is 3 times what it costs to imprison them in a single cell at the highest security for 40 years. I have nothing to add about this guy it is the first I have heard of him and I make no defense for his actions.

No thanks, but now you got the Canadian Website another visitor, because I am curious to see why they pick him to highlight, versus someone that shot in the dark when someone broke into his home, in the room where his baby was sleeping. Our entire justice system needs revamping. The bulk of opinion is that Mary Winkler belongs on death row too.

I cannot believe that there are people who feel sorry for this guy. I think I might write him and tell him how he should suffer just like his victim. Of course that's what he wants, attention. I think I'll say a prayer for Anthony's family instead.

Holy crap! What a psycho! I'd think that if I did ever want to be penpals with an inmate, I'd at least pick one who picked up a gun and killed someone with one shot versus someone who could act with such violence and insanity as this! I think I'm going to go puke up my supper now. Great article though. :)
