The hardest working chick in the game, Beyonce will go up against Rihanna and Jay-Z this year at the MTV Video Music Awards. The show will be held September 9th in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The VMA favorite is leading the pack and keepin' it moving after her highly publicized fall while screaming on the track to Ring the Alarm at a performance. Beyonce and Justin Timberlake receive the most nods this year with seven nominations a piece.

Foreign born Barbados beauty and international favorite, Rihanna is trailing Beyonce with five nods for the explosively successful video Umbrella featuring her self-proclaimed mentor and boss, Beyonce's beau; Jay-Z. Rihanna credits the bulk of her success to Jay-Z who quickly signed her to Def Jam at the tender age of sixteen. Jay-Z has successfully shaped Rhianna's career and changed her life in the past few years.

Rihanna told Giant magazine that her childhood was spent watching her father battle crack addiction before he conquered the habit. Experiencing a lot as a child perhaps has made her the mature grounded person she is. Rihanna's careful about the decision she makes with the help of her mentor. She tells People magazine that Jay-Z is very protective of her. She confided that he (Jay-Z) screens all her possible suitors and "looks out for me." Rihanna's focus has payed off with the VMA nods as well as being a chart topper.

The catchy Umbrella is reminiscent of Jay-Z's heart-felt apology song, Song Cry that stated "We used to use umbrellas to face the cold weather...."
As usual, the creative president of Def Jam and king of subliminal metaphors made the hot line into a hot song for his budding starlet. Umbrella has broken international billboard records and become a worldwide "I'll always be here for you no matter what they say" anthem.

While Rihanna and Jay-Z stand under each other's umbrella; Beyonce holds her own- solo, garnering nods for the Neyo -penned break-up song of the year; Irreplaceable. The two singers will compete against each other for best female artist of the year and video of the year.

I wish you would have talked more about Fall Out Boy and Amy Winehouse. Amy Winehouse is one of the best new artist out right now and all you usually see is bad press on her.

I was so disappointed with this years VMA's too. It was all over the place and just hard to stomach through. I think Rihanna is the new biggest star and I agree that Britney should not have performed at all. She wasn't ready and it shows how the music industry and media take advantage of stars when they're at their worst.

MTV played Kanye again. Kanye should've opened up the show like he wanted to not Britney. Kanye should've been nominated for video of the year. I was excited about the show after reading your article but the show was a trainwreck and Jay-Z didn't even show up. Rihanna had to perform umbrella with Chris Brown. I'm glad Rihanna got video of the year because I agree with Kanye's statement. T think Busta Rhymes does the best videos.

Abesi I agree with you at the end of the day when it comes to what a singer is supposed to be Beyonce defines all that. Its about how much work u put into your craft & the girl works hard. The Beyonce experience show was incredible. I'm happy Rihanna got video of the year cause Umbrella is my anthem too. I miss u!!!!

Abesi I love your articles. I met you at Hiram Hick's office at the Artist Factory 2 years ago. I don't know if u remember me but i did a demo for Dent who produced Survivor. I like how u've always given Beyonce props for her work ethics. I used to be offended when u would say she was what a pop artist is supposed to be but after watching her in concert this year I get what u mean because she is a great vocalist & performer. I like the different flavor Rihanna brings to the game too. I left a message for u I would like u to hear my new demo. Thx-Sanjee
