You may have heard it said that true love only comes once in a lifetime. It has also been said that true love lasts a lifetime. What do I mean by dime store love? Dime stores used to be a convenient and very expensive place to shop. Children could buy penny candy and adults could shop for bargains. Dime stores no longer exist but dime store love is on the rise.

You're probably wondering what in the world I'm talking about so let me explain. Dime store love is a term I use to refer to people who meet someone, know them a few days or a week and claim they are in love with that person. This has also been referred to as infatuation. People often confused love with infatuation. First of all, let me say that I do believe that love at first sight can and does happen but it doesn't happen to the same individual every couple of months or even every few years. When someone falls in love that easily or that often I refer to it as dime store love.

There are some people who tend to "fall in love" with anyone who shows them a certain level of attention. It is actually as sad situation because these people often are prime targets to be used by unscrupulous characters. Don't be a victim of dime store love. Here are a few things to take into consideration before letting your heart get too involved.

How long have you known your new love interest? Come on, let's face the facts. If you've only known the person a week how well can you really know him/her? Chances are that you really don't know the person that well at all. Some people fall in love at the drop of a hat but is it really love. More than likely it's just an infatuation.Sure, love at first sight can happen but be realistic. The truth is that you don't know what you're getting yourself into. Ask yourself if this is what you really want. Take time to think before you answer your own question. Don't jump into anything that you are unsure of. A good rule of thumb is when in doubt, don't.

Takeaways
  • A good relationship grows in value over time.
  • Knowing what you want makes all the difference.
  • Dime store love is just that, it's worth the value of a dime these days.

"People have dime store love affairs all the time." I love this statement. So true, so true!

I couldn't agree with you more, Darlene. I was friends with my husband for almost a year before we even started dating and it was a further two years after that until we got married. So it is really important to know the person you claim to be "in love with". Sophie
