With the fall semester soon approaching for colleges around the country, many students are resolving to do better this school year. Higher grades are one of the most common resolutions for the returning college student.

How can a returning college student reach his or her goal earning higher grades this year? Here are a few tips from a college graduate and current Master's student.

Better Grades:
For most college students, high grades are the mark of a successful college semester. So how can a college student make sure that they achieve high marks?
Course load- your course load is an important factor in a successful college semester. Whether you are taking nine or twenty units (hours, credits, or whatever your school calls them), make sure that you are prepared for the amount of time that will be required in order to achieve success. It is important not to overload yourself. While you do not want to take a decade to earn your degree, taking on too much of a course load will only be counterproductive if you end up having to repeat a class later on.

Start early- Make sure you buy your books and other materials at the beginning of the semester. I know they are expensive. Plan for it. It is impossible to get a head start in the semester if you don't have your course materials.

Once you get the syllabus, look through the schedule which will probably be listed somewhere on the syllabus. Keep this handy. When you get home, start reading. It is common for students to not really "get in" to the semester for a few weeks into school. I have been guilty of this myself. Next thing you know, you have a test in two days and you haven't started studying. It is easier and much less stressful to start reading and preparing from the beginning.

I've been diagnosed with sleep apnea and I have found it very complicated to reltain information. I have done everything possible to read, study, take notes, reread, I have done everything possible in my power to study, but my retention is really poor. I wish there was help for this type of mental problem. (Rigalco@yahoo.com)
