Almost everyday we turn on the news and see homeowners who have lost their homes to hurricanes, fires, floods or other disaster. Occurrences like these illustrate how important it is not only to have homeowner's insurance but to do your research before purchasing and to know what information you will need if you ever have to file a claim. Many people who have home insurance have discovered too late that they should have done a better job of informing themselves of important aspects of homeowner's insurance. Research and knowledge can make a huge difference in your experience with your insurer if you ever do need to file a claim.

The most important consideration is purchasing a homeowner's policy is to be sure that you are dealing with a reputable company. Be sure that the company is licensed to conduct business in your state. Take time to research the company both online and through asking friends and family if they have any experiences with the company. Compare the packages that the company offers taking care to look at what is offered and the cost of the premiums.

Once you have found a reputable company and decided on a policy, be sure that you thoroughly understand the terms of the policy. If you are not sure, ask your agent to explain. Some insurance does not cover flood damage for example, so be sure that you understand exactly what is covered. Do not make assumptions. Note any requirements or conditions in your policy. If the policy states that you must have a fire alarm for example, be sure you have one and that it works. Not meeting the conditions of your policy may mean the insurer won't pay.

Be sure that you have enough coverage to cover possible losses. If you have a mortgage, the mortgage company will require that you have enough insurance to cover your mortgage in order to protect their investment, but that may not be enough to cover items that you have in your home. Think about how much your furnishing and other items are worth.
