Chauntecleer, in the course of wooing his beloved Pertelote, quotes a well known 14th century proverb: "mulier est hominis confusio." He then proceeds to render the saying into English quite incorrectly:

Madame, the sentence of this Latyn is,
'Womman is mannes joye and al his blis.'
