I have had a love/hate relationship with driving since I first got behind the wheel of a car at the age of 17. Now that I am a more experienced driver I have another issue to deal with and that is my driving pet peeves that I see each time I drive! The following driving pet peeves are not occasional occurrences. I see at least one, if not more, each time I drive.

1. Driving while Talking on a Mobile (Cell) Phone

This has to be my number one pet peeve when it comes to driving. Using a mobile phone while driving is being gradually banned in certain parts of the country, which is good. I am looking forward to a universal ban because people are not fully focused on the road ahead or the road conditions around them while they are engaged in a conversation over the phone. I often see people trying to turn, overtake or reverse while talking on their phones! Multi tasking seems to have taken on a new meaning for some people. But it has also turned people into dangerous drivers.

2. Tailgating

This comes in a close second. I find it rude and completely unnecessary when another vehicle pulls in behind me and tailgates me, trying to force me to drive above the posted or safe speed limit. I believe that each motorist should concentrate on their own driving technique and make sure that they are driving correctly, not to try and tell other drivers how to drive. This can cause the person who is being tailgated to feel intimidated and nervous and it can also be the start of a rear end collision if the car in front has to perform an emergency stop at any given time.

3. Illegal Overtaking

I do not mind if a driver overtakes me on a stretch of road where it is safe and legal to do so. But what I do not like is when I am driving within the speed limit and a car screeches ahead of me and overtakes in a no overtaking zone. I have to admit that I was quite happy once when a police officer pulled someone over for illegally overtaking!

4. Speeding through a Housing Estate

Great article. Couldn't agree more! Once we moved farther out in the suburbs I let someone else drive in the city while I read. Keeps my nerves calmed.

Thanks for the comments. I am sometimes scared to get on the road because of some of the awful driving I see. Sophie

Excellent article! 1, 2, & 5 are on my top list, especially 2. We have quite a few country roads here that are short cuts to the bigger towns. People feel that they are on the Indy 500 and push you to go faster then is safe to due to the fact that we have deer and other wildlife running around, not to mention sharp curves.

I really hate 1, 3, and 5. They infuriate me!

Yep, driving in NJ is awful!! Great article Sophie! If people would show just a little bit of respect for other people, driving would not be the stressful and nerve wracking experience it often is.

Every driver will be able to relate to this list. Hmmm, I can't decide which one of the five is the absolute worst.

Great article! I have to agree with Zac, driving in NJ is awful. I think that #2 may even be worse than #1 at times, though both are very big annoyances!
