Electricity
One of the first disadvantages of home water distillers is the amount of electricity that they use. They use a considerable amount of electricity to process the water. Because so much energy is required to treat the water, home water distillers are some of the most expensive water-treatment systems in use today.
Cleaning
Another disadvantage of home water distillers is that they require frequent cleaning. When they filter minerals from the water, they are left behind in the system. Because of this, you will frequently have to clean them using a mineral descaler to get rid of the buildup of minerals that are left behind.
Stainless steel
Many home water distillers are made using stainless steel. Unfortunately, your processed water may be contaminated with aluminum if you use distillers made with stainless steel. You can avoid this by using home water distillers that are made with glass instead of stainless steel.
Contaminants
Home water distillers boil the water to turn it into steam and remove a wide variety of contaminants. However, certain compounds like toluene and benzene have lower boiling points than water so they will turn into steam and contaminate your processed water. You will need gas vents or an extra carbon filter in order to remove these organic compounds.
Taste
One of the last disadvantages of home water distillers is the taste. Distillers remove all minerals from the water. These minerals are responsible for giving water the taste that you are used to. Once they are dissolved and removed, the water will have a bland taste just like deionized water.
