As the kids return to school, the rest of us who have flexible schedules can take advantage of the balmy temperatures and prime spots in the sand to enjoy the Pacific Ocean.

For those of you considering vacation getaways and great discounts in September, you'll want to look into visiting four particular beaches in San Diego, California.

Ocean Beach, Pacific Beach, Coronado Island beaches and La Jolla Shores offer sand, sun, surf and those relaxing walks we all want to take. All of them are great spots to watch stunning sunsets all year.

Ocean Beach

Ocean Beach is located at the end of Interstate 8, off Sunset Cliffs Boulevard. Any right turn from Voltaire Street to Newport Avenue will lead you to this hot spot. Jetties (man-made fingers of various-sized boulders) separate three different kinds of ocean pleasure. Voltaire leads you to the middle beach with ample parking. From the parking lot to the water, you will find spacious sandy spots with volleyball nets and fire rings for fun of all sorts for small and large groups.

Over the jetty from the parking lot lies Dog Beach, a great place to take your canine companions to frollick in the waves together. This beach offers shallow waters for several yards into the ocean. Twenty years ago, you could also drive over the jetty and enjoy sand whomping and tailgate parties in the sand. For obvious safety reasons, that idea is no longer available, but it's ideal still if you like to take your dogs with you!

Newport Avenue boasts four blocks of exotic food, clothing, and antique stores leading to the beach that has the longest pier on the west coast. The Ocean Beach Pier is great for fishing and long walks, and the Ocean Beach Cafe has some of the freshest fish and seafood available in town. It's fun to sit in the restaurant, feeling the ocean swells while partaking in a healthy meal. If you like to surf or visit tide pools, then this is the section of beach to see.

Across the street from this beach sits the Ocean Beach Hotel that was recently renovated. I love waking up to the sounds of the pounding waves. Also available for extended stays at Ocean Beach are quaint beach cottages overlooking the pier.

Beach combing Coronado at sunset about this time last year, I met up with Tiger Woods doing the same :-) My fave is south a bit, away from all the tourist trap stuff.

Tiger, you know well that this is the first piece I'd read after a quick scan of your content. Nicely described. I spent SOME time recalling the times (many) I spent at these beaches in the mid 60's thru the 70's, then the changes from the 80's. I'll have to put something up in the cafe. SD should have you do their flyers for the tourists.

The beauty of living in California is one beach after another. I think I went to Ocean Beach once. I remember the beaches being so narrow, more like ocean with little sand down San Diego way.

I haven't been here in years. I think I might have to make a special trip - since we don't have oceans here. :)
