NFL New Orleans Saints Training Camp Report -- Receivers

Can Marques Colston Repeat Last Year's Magical Rookie Campaign?

The New Orleans Saints are on most people's short list for Super Bowl contention in 2007 and the talent at the receiver position is part of the reason why. They are a bit of an eclectic mix, but certainly
a powerful addition to an already explosive offense. With Reggie Bush and Deuce MccAllister catching balls out of the backfield, the receivers are free to run their routes with almost complete abandon. The Saint's secondary can ill afford to ignore the run, so the receivers have a step out of the gate. This year's passing game will be strong once again.

The most interesting question mark coming into 2007 is if second year superman Marques Colston will once again shred defenses with the same success as his rookie year. Colston had 70 catches for 1038 yards while playing in 14 games as a rookie. Additionally he stretched the field for 8 touchdowns, and led the Saints receiving corp. He is very much in the same vein as Hall of Famer Jerry Rice in that he quietly goes about his business and catches balls. Look for him to increase his numbers even more as the featured receiver in this high octane offense.

The number two spot looks like it will belong to Devery Henderson. Devery had an impressive 23 yards per catch average last year, and gained 740+ yards in only 13 games. A speed guy with great hands, Henderson had 5 touchdowns as well. Henderson is one of those guys that might challenge for most improved player this year.

Next on the depth chart will be Terrance Cooper, a former Dallas Cowboy draft pick that was acquired last year. He played a limited role, but still scored three touchdowns and had 9 catches of 20+ yards. This East Carolina standout has carved a place for himself on one of the best offensive teams in the league. He has great hands and can catch the tough balls over the middle in spite of a small frame.

The Saints have also picked up David Patten, formerly of the Redskins and Patriots. He is truly a hit or miss guy. If he is on a good year, he can certainly contribute. Also, his post season experience will serve the Saints well.

Good one on the Saints. They should be contending for the NFC Championship again this year...IMO.
