Volunteering is definitely a good use of your time. No, you may not get paid financially, but the nonmonetary benefits will create a huge reward. You will have the satisfaction of helping someone else, and knowing that you did something good for someone or some cause.

Volunteering is important in many ways. Some organizations just can't afford to pay people money to help them. Some of these organizations happen to be the best ones around. If it weren't for the volunteers, the services couldn't be provided. Another benefit to volunteering is that you don't have to get hired to do something you love. If you like singing to old people, you don't have to get hired to do it. You can just do it for free. If you like selling hot dogs to families at fundraisers, you don't have to get a job at a hot dog stand or become a vendor- you can just volunteer at the next fundraiser.

Volunteering also reaps other types of rewards. Emotionally, it feels good to help another person. It feels good to know that because of you, someone has a smile on their face, even if it's just for a few hours. Many people don't have the funds available to make big donations, or even small ones, to charities to help them reach their cause. So, this gives even the poorest person the ability to do something nice and give back to the community.

So, what are the best ways for you to volunteer this fall in Maryland?

1. Donate blood. This isn't so much giving of your time, but of a much needed resource. This is one of the biggest needs of many communities in the State of Maryland that doesn't cost alot of money to meet. We really need to have enough of a supply of blood, for when people get into accidents and get injured, when persons need transfusions, etc. The need for blood never ends and it's a great way to donate something of yourself if you can't donate money.

If you don't care to donate blood, or you can't for some reason, you can also volunteer your time at the Red Cross.

This is a great article for Marylanders. I think I'll try to send a little traffic your way by mentioning it on my Maryland blog, www.joustingforjustice.com.
