Racism - An Ugly Side Effect of Online Video Gaming

Black Players Report Being Harassed While Playing on the Internet

In real life, Quinton "Rampage" Jackson of the Ultimate Fighting Championships is the Light Heavyweight Champion and one of the last guys in the world a 15-year old kid would probably want to mess with.

But over a cable Internet connection playing the Xbox game "Halo 2," Jackson was an easy
 target.

In the June 2007 issue of Dub magazine, Jackson revealed that he stopped playing Halo 2 online, which is one of his favorite games, because of negative experiences he had with members of his own teams.

"I stopped because my own team would kill me because they would hear my voice and start calling "(N-word) this and (N-word) that," Jackson said. "If you was right next to me at the arcade, you wouldn't say nothing. I don't even tell them who I am, but I just forgive them for being ignorant."

You have to be impressed with Jackson's ability to take the insults in stride, especially considering how easy it would be for him to fire back and get into his own war of words over the headset, but as Jackson knows, it just wouldn't be worth it. A grown man isn't going to get into a war of words with a presumably young kid over a video game.

This is a situation I have also witnessed on the game Socom 2 for Playstation 2, and the verbal abuse I heard was definitely not something I would wish on anyone.

My team of eight players was comprised of about three African-American and four Caucasian players, as well as myself, a Caucasian. The black players were talking about strategy for a certain level and where to attack the opposing team, and one of the white players jumped in and made fun of his voice. The black player objected and the white player called him the N-word much like in Jackson's story.

A fight broke out in the game between teammates and it was basically a mini-race riot online in the game. I actually joined in on the black players' sides and killed off the antagonizers a few times before they finally left.

Related information
  • Racism should not be tolerated online any more than in real life
  • Violent games like Halo 2 and Socom tend to have the most incidents
  • Troublemakers can be reported and subsequently banned or suspended

i would agree, Kat....and I apologize that I didnt focus o n that aspect. Women are harrassed quite a bit on games from what I've seen in various ways.

Its just as sexist as it is racist. I thought it was just men that had a monopoly on video games. Guess it is just white men. And 12 year olds.

exactly. that's also my point, that the company needs to enforce the rules better and stop letting jackasses ruin the experience for people who just want to have a good time

Well, I've never been called cracker or anything like that myself and I've heard the other way many times, and let's face it, an african american person is going to take it much more personally than someone like me who is in the white majority so i wrote the article based on what i felt the problem was and the way I've seen it occur. my apologies.

This is a big problem on Live. X-Box claims to have a zero tolerance policy but they do not enforce it. Every few games I play in there are racial slurs thrown left and right there is nothing that can be done.

Ah the race card. Great way to get some hit's to your website. You presented only one aspect of this problem though. I'm White/Irish/Catholic and I've been called Cracker, Stupid White Boy, and have had black people tell me just how much they hate white people. It's a two way street. Personally I"m not a racist person at all and don't use racial slurs while gaming. Most of the racial slurs stem from someone getting beat badly in a game and then trash talking starts. When a person doesn't have a comeback (because you have no comeback when you get beat badly in a game) they try to use some other way to hurt the person. Example Player A is playing Player B in Halo 2. Player A kills Player B 10 times during the match. At the end of the game Player A starts talking trash. He say's you suck I killed you 10 times noob. Player B has no comeback because he did get killed 10 times and the stats don't lie. So player B says shut up your stupid (N-Bomb). In the end

i think that what happens when there are no repercussions are definitely revealing of a person's true character. as a white man and i hate to say this but most of the older white people i talk to eventually say something truly racist once we become friends and I earn his trust. it seems like he is trying to bond with me and establish a deeper connection on our supposed superiority over others, and that pisses me off. mainly cuz it happens so often and with otherwise good guys. i thought that these biases were dying out a bit with the younger generation but video games online has caused me to re-think that. there are a lot of idiots on there and they think they can get away with it. it's sad but true. and yeah this is nothing to make jokes about. don't stand for this garbage online please. team kill anyone who does this or address them verbally if you have the guts.

The only people I'm "racist" against when playing online is young children with girl voices who talk trash, swear and disrupt the game with nonsense chatter. I can't stand that, and generally it's a game that is rated M and they're playing it because mom and dad don't understand what a rating system is. I don't even play with a headset any longer as I just don't want to hear it. If I could "Jay and Silent Bob" these little retards, I'd spend the money and travel from city to city, knocking on doors and laying waste to these moronic little dipshits. After they were beaten mercilessly (but in a responsible, almost loving, way) I'd go after mom and dad for being stupid.

I don't have time to listen to yapping because my women take care of me when I play the game...You know what Im talking about.
