In recent years, business blogs have moved from being an optional way of marketing to an absolute necessity. Following is a list of five important tasks a blog can accomplish for your business:

1. Establish yourself-and your business staff-as experts in a field

No doubt your business has a niche it is trying to serve, and you want to be seen as an expert in that category. Whether you make the best doughnuts in the world, or plan cruises to Costa Rica, your business blog is an important place to demonstrate and build confidence in your level of expertise.

A doctor may provide updates on the latest medical research, an engineering firm may post about the latest technology breakthroughs, while a taxi company may blog about the latest hot destinations in their area of service. The sky really is the limit in terms of blog content. It just has to be related to your business and interesting to customers and potential customers.

2. A Powerful Sales Tool

As many businesses have already discovered, blogging about product innovations is a great way to generate buzz, which in turn can generate action and sales. Some businesses have found blogging to be more effective than running full-page ads in major newspapers or other publications.

3. Responding to problems

Blogs can also be an important method of communication during business emergencies, such as accidents involving employees, natural disasters, bankruptcies, scandals involving employees or product recalls.

While no business wants to be involved in the situations described above, unfortunate events do happen from time to time. Reports coming from the news media may or may not be accurate, but a business blog can give your company a voice in the middle of a crisis. Customers, clients and the rest of the world will know the latest news and your official company position, because it is frequently updated on the company blog. Your phone lines should also ring less often with this valuable communication tool in place.

4. Open up the normal lines of communication with customers
