Poll: Majority of Americans Want Immigration Reform
This year has seen one issue that will not go away until a solution is found. Immigration reform. We had a bill that had bi partisan support and the support of the White House that was defeated on the floor of the Senate, due to pressure from the
public and just this week the President has come up with a new plan that has some very strict proposals.
One of them is that workers would be fired if they cannot provide proper identification within 90 days. This fits in pretty well with the poll results from Rasmussen which show that 79% would favor firing anyone who provides false documents, 9% do not agree and 12% are not sure. In the same vein, 74% want a person to have to provide documents if they want to rent an apartment, 17% do not agree.
On the subject of border security, 68% rate it as very important to improve the security and reduce illegal entry. Demographically speaking this view is held by 80% of Republicans, 62% of Democrats and 64% of independents.
As to how the government is handling the immigration situation, the approval rating is only at 12% with 71% saying the government is not doing enough.
As to the defeated bill, just 16% think the bill would have resulted in the reduction of illegal immigration and 41% believe it would have led to more.
The bill would have resulted in illegal aliens who are already in the country becoming legal and just 28% consider that to be a very important goal. Demographically, 36% of the Democrats think it would have been a very important goal along with 22% of Republicans and 23% of the independents.
