The world of domain names has changed from its slow beginning to a multimillion dollar market. But just as practices to exploit and resell names have grown, so have the caveats against getting into the domain name market.

Domain names are the urls (DNS addresses) that Internet web browsers use to find a given website. The branding and commodity building of these names has created a business market. Anyone can buy a domain name. They do not need a company or a million dollars. But they should know more than simple facts before deciding to invest in domain sales as a career.

Newcomers to domain sales and the opportunities of the domain name reseller market should review carefully all the literature and FAQs they can find before spending money and committing resources to domain name sales careers.

1. Arbitrage

This is a practice of exploiting domain name interest and traffic to get ad revenue. Domain name owners should know this is illegal. But many domain name owners and website designers make sites that do this anyway. Reading about domain name practices is required reading before spending money on domain names. Domain name owners of good standing frown on this tactic.

Arbitrage is when a site visitor clicks on a menu item and it activate some kind of ad or survey or migrates the web browser to another page which features ads. Website designers do this to maximize return on value invested in domain names. The resulting changes in the website traffic reports and statistics allow domain name owners to market their domain name and an inflated value.

2. Registrars

Not all registrars are created alike. Many registrars have similar advertising and promise the same level of services, prices, and dependabilty. Multiple registrars means a lot of domain names at different websites to keep track of. This can be confusing and lead to an unplanned name drop. A name drop is when the domain name comes up for expiration and the domain name owner does not realize it. The name then "drops" back into the market. The registrars sells the name and gains any profit.
