As my hands clutched the wheel, I kept my foot pressed all the way down on the gas. Looking in my rearview mirror, I saw the SUV right behind me, and I heard its engine screaming as its driver kept a lead foot on the gas. If I braked, she would kill me, and if I tried to swerve out of her way again, she would kill me.

Driving from Middle Country Road to Veterans Highway in Smithtown, NY, I had come to a full stop, surveying the traffic passing by me. I started to inch out, making sure that I was not in the path of any vehicles. I was about to go when I heard a blast from behind my beat-up, red BMW, and that's when I first saw her.

Before I could react, the SUV zoomed ahead of me, and I then followed. I kept my distance until I saw the roads ahead splitting off, one leading to Route 454 and the other leading to Northern Parkway, which I wanted. I slowed down to get into the northern lane, but she slowed down to block me. I slowed down again as did she, and she left me with only one other choice.

Barely making it ahead of the raging SUV, I slammed my foot on the gas. Once on Northern Parkway, I planned on jumping back into the other lane and trying to escape the lunatic behind me, but, for now, I was just trying to survive. With no sight of police nesting on the sides of the road, we raced on, bumper to bumper to the Northern Parkway.

Suddenly, the SUV flew into the other lane and then cut ahead of me. She braked immediately as did I. A moment later, the SUV went no more than ten miles of speed, braking on and off, and now cars were passing in the other lane. I was trapped behind her, and I knew that she wanted the accident. She wanted to paint the road red.

What seemed like eternity, I heard a high pitch scream bellow out of the driver-side window, and then she took off like a bat out of hell. The car became a blur a moment later. Then, nothing followed. The Road Rage Driver was gone, and I could finally breathe a deep sigh of relief for surviving to tell this story.
