Even though the chocolate industry is a multi-billion dollar industry in the United States, quite often very little of that money makes it back to the third world cocoa farmers across the globe. Divine Chocolate tries to rectify that situation, by having more of the profits get back to the farmers themselves. According to the press release issued by Divine Chocolate they are a farmer owned chocolate company that participates in Fair Trade. The press release indicates that their goal is to empower the cocoa farmers in Ghanna's Juapo Kokoo cooperative who through other companies may receive less than $300 each through the chocolate sales of other companies. According to the press release, the cocoa farmers are Ghanna are so poor that few of them have even tasted the final product of their labor. Despite the majority of the world's cocoa being grown in West Africa, the profits rarely make it to those producers.
With Divine Chocolate being owner by the farmers themselves, purchasing chocolate from Divine is a way to send the money from the chocolate sales back to the farmers who produce the raw product for the finish good. The company is owned by these cocoa producing farmers. They have came out with three new products that will be sold at independent retail stores as well as natural foods stores thoughout the country for the holiday season that is approaching quicker than many realize.
The first item is an Advent Calendar. Behind each of the doors that are numbered for the days of the Advent season is a piece of chocolate produced by Divine Chocolate. They are also producing gold coins that brings attention to the plight of these farmers. These are chocolate coins covered in a gold wrapper. One side emphasizes the inequity between the farmers and the industry with their "Fair Deal for cocoa growers" logo according to the press release. The final item being produced for the holiday season is Divine Chocolate After Dinner Mints. These are chocolate pieces with peppermint centers to be enjoyed after meals or at any time of the day.
