The Jacksonville Jaguars have an interesting mix of receivers that are all comparable in talent, size, and productivity. This is an interesting dilemma as they do not really have an identity yet. Without a true number one receiver, any one of three receivers could certainly step into this role by opening day. One thing they do have is an abundance of big, strong receiver types that consistently perform in the 500-600 yards per season category. Typically numbers a decent number 2 might put on the table annually, they are interchangeable parts. Unfortunately, without defined roles in an offense, that can be a bad thing as well.

Any one of three receivers may end up at the number one slot. Ernest Wilford, Reggie Williams, or Matt Jones are the likely candidates. Wilford, a 6-4 215 pounder entering his fourth season in 2007, seems to be the most likely candidate. He is a physical receiver that has little trouble getting off the line against anyone, and runs tight routes. His last two years could be described as steady, if unspectacular. Last year he had 500+ yards on the season with only 2 touchdowns. However, the year prior was a bit stronger as he had 600+ yards with 7 touchdowns. The lack of a defined role in the offense hurt him in 2006 and this season may be a breakout year for the former Virginia Tech Hokie.

Reggie Williams, another fourth year player out of Washington, is certainly another strong candidate for the slot. Like Wilford, he a long wiry type at 6-4 and 213 pounds. His numbers last year were a bit better however, with 616 yards and 4 touchdowns. Williams is not quite as good at the little things like blocking but is a bit of an upgrade over Wilford catching the ball. Given the running game the Jaguars implement, expect Williams to line up at number 2 most of the time.

Takeaways
  • Matt Jones is a rising player that will become the Jaguars primary guy in 2007.
  • Reggie Williams is a solid number two receiver.
  • Ernest Wilford has untapped potential that needs to be realized for the Jaguars to excel.
