Sometimes people suggest to me that I try visualizing making money, finding just the right apartment, being healed, or finding the perfect soulmate. They feel smug that they have recently learned New Age manifestation techniques, and want to share them with the uninitiated. They put on their comforting voices, give me a pep talk about how the Universe gives us exactly what we ask for, and how if we have anything missing in our lives, it is our fault because we are obviously creating it our difficulties. And that is wrong. We should have only positive things in our lives. Be positive, and everything will be fine. And if it isn’t working out, it must be my karma. I must have done something bad in the past that is now keeping me from having everything I want.

I just look at them. There is no point in even trying to explain. Since I was a baby, I was immersed in the metaphysical. That was when my father discovered books about how to make money through attitude. “It’s all in your attytude,” I would dance around, singing. “It’s all in your attytude!” I gave him presents of clay tablets proclaiming “PMA.” Positive mental attitude. He told me enthusiastically how to visualize what I wanted, and he passed on the books to me, a precocious girl ready to learn. I visualized being able to levitate every day.

Takeaways
  • It is useful to go beyond the black and white thinking about manifesting techniques.
  • Can we move beyond the idea that everything happens for a reason, or is karma, or the subconscious?
  • Can we discuss physical causes, co creation with other people, and randomness?
Did You Know?
I have done the visualization exercises to manifest safety and abundance and then been robbed immediately.

Great article. When you said Manifesting doesn't always work, you are right. But what always work is that the energy you sent out in the manifestation effort will always return back to you multiplied, sometimes quickly, sometimes much later, if not in the same form, then in a completely different form. It's foolish to manifest a relationship with a celebrity if you are an ordinary person. But the energy will come back to you, maybe in the form of finding a good friend/mate. What I have learnt over the years is that manifestation works exactly only when the desire is in perfect alignment with the Higher Self and the destiny of your life. The Universe sometimes doesn't fulfill what you want because it may not be for your highest good. http://web.singnet.com.sg/~vishal

Heya, Lotus Wilson here, good article. I always found the "you create your own reality, period" thinking to be overly simplistic. Your comments about it being more complex seems right on. Oh shit, I ate a big thing of greasy pork with a loaf of white bread and now I can't shit, oh gee it must be a past life!@!@!@ hahaha. :)

It's called blaming the victim and very judgemental.
