In recent history we could remember that there had been outbreaks that involve diseases that are zoonotic. Zoonotic diseases are kinds of diseases that are transmutable between people and animals. Avian flu or the bird flu was notable because of the stir it made in the international scene and the local areas as well. A lot of people were terrified and because of bird flu. But it's not only bird flu that attacks people; there are other strains that are deadly to both human and animal.

Simply said what the Giardiasis virus does is that it attacks the intestines of dogs and the organism that is responsible for the attacks is Giardia lamblia, protozoa. The giardia organism dwells in the digestive area of an extensive array of home and untamed animal species as well as humans. It is on of the common causes of gastroenteritis in humans and sometimes in animals; it has infected approximately 200 million people all around the world.

Transmission of Gardiasis is on the fecal-oral route or when a person made a close contact to an infection organism. Contaminated food and water that are also routes. People who spend more time in public places are more vulnerable especially those who use unsafe water.

Testing for canine giardiasis

ELIS or enzyme-linked immuno-sorbent assay are now used to test giardia presence in canines. It is an immunologic test and 90% capable in detecting the protozoa.

The symptoms of Canine Giardiasis

In order to know if your dog already contracted the disease, you need to know the symptoms. Experts say that canine giardiasis symptoms may include:

- loose or watery stool lethargy

- fever

- upset stomach

- explosive diarrhea

- stomach cramps loss of appetite

- projectile vomiting (which is usually uncommon)

- bloating

- flatulence
