Vadodara is one of the most important cities of Gujarat State in India. Vadodara is famous for its world famous educational university and many other site seeing spots that everybody will like to see. Sur Sagar is one of such places and all the tourists coming to Vadodara make it a point to visit this lovely place. Sur Sagar is a manmade lake in circular shape, having total circumference of one and a half mile. It is around 60 feet deep in the center. This lake was made in the nineteenth century by the kings of Vadodara of the Gaikwad family. Since then, this spot has become the center of attraction for all the tourists visiting Vadodara and also for the residents of Vadodara. The most positive factor for this lake is that it is located in the middle of the city of Vadodara. The famous Nyaymandir gate and the Mangal Bazaar of Vadodara are on the shore of this beautiful lake. You will hardly find such a big lake in the heart of the city anywhere in India. The lake remains full of water normally all throughout the year. However, its beauty gets multiplied during the rainy season, as it gets full up to the brink. There are underground gates to empty out this lake in case of the danger of it's overflowing. These gates lead the water to the Vishwamitri River that is flowing through the city of Vadodara. The special lightings are done on Saturdays and Sundays in the evening around the lake between 8pm to 10pm. The lake looks really wonderful at that time, giving you a feel of heaven on earth. There are lot of turtles and the fishes of many varieties in this lake. But fishing is strictly prohibited in the lake. There is a wall of concrete constructed all around the lake, where the people can sit and enjoy the evenings. Recently, Vadodara Municipal Corporation has constructed a large statue of Lord Shiva in the middle of this lake. This Lord Shiva statue is in standing posture and is 120 feet tall. The special lighting arrangement on this statue gives a tremendous effect during the late evening and night hours. The water fountains are arranged from the Lord Shiva's hair in all directions, finally falling in to the lake.
