Just about any item in your home has the potential to be repaired or recycled rather than discarded and replaced by a new one. To get started, here are 12 of the most common items that can be repaired or recycled, but plenty more are sure to be located around your home.
1. Answering Machines. First check the service manual for troubleshooting guidelines or warranty repair parts. If it's a brand from a major company, there may be a local service outlet in the area that services the machine and makes repairs covered under the warranty. If the machine is beyond repair, ask an electronic repair shop about purchasing a reconditioned machine, which may be of higher quality and less expensive than buying new.
2. Cameras. With disposable cameras and inexpensive 35mm automatics, camera manufacturers are making it easier for consumers to consider cameras a disposable item. But over time, replacing cameras becomes expensive. Most camera stores and major retailers where cameras are sold generally offer camera repair services. But be sure to ask for an estimate first so you don't end up spending more in repairs than what the camera is actually worth. Another option is to purchase reconditioned equipment.
3. Carpets and Rugs. High traffic areas, pets and spills can cause damaged areas in your carpet or area rugs. Instead of purchasing new floor coverings, consider having the carpet rewoven. Your local rug company can assist with such services or recommend a skilled worker who can turn a worn rug into one that looks as good as new.
