When a hurricane is threatening South Florida, you must pay close attention to the evacuation orders. If you are told to evacuate the area, the heed the warnings, otherwise, you could find yourself trapped in a dangerous situation with no way out during the storm.

Evacuating can pose a problem when you have pets. Although there are two shelters in the area that accept pets--one where you can stay with your pet and the other where you must leave your pet--shelters are considered last resorts if you have no where else to go. Plus, your pets will be required to stay in a carrier or crate which is not fun for them.

If you don't have any friends or relatives to stay with in the area, then your next option might be a hotel. Hotels can be pricey in the area, but if you can afford it and you are able to obtain a room, then a hotel is probably the way to go.

There are a limited number of hotels in Northern Palm Beach County--North Palm Beach, Juno, and Jupiter--that accept pets. However, during hurricanes, some hotels that don't accept pets will bend the rules because it's an emergency, so call around.

1) Holiday Inn Express

This hotel is beautiful and is located across the street from the beach in Juno on the corner of Donald Ross Road and US 1. They accept large and small pets, but there is a $10 a night pet fee. The only problem with this hotel--it's so close to the beach that it might be in an evacuation area as well. However, if you live in a low lying area or in a mobile home and need to evacuate, this is a great place to go. During the summer months, rooms average about $100 a night.

2) La Quinta

Located at 34 Fisherman's Wharf west of US 1 and off of Indiantown Road in Jupiter, this hotel features indoor corridors and very nice rooms. The hotel allows pets, but they do have a weight limit, so call in advance. The rooms are about $100 a night during the summer.

3) Fairfield Inns and Suites

This hotel is located at 6748 Indiantown Road, just west of I-95 and the Florida Turnpike. It is a non-smoking hotel with indoor corridors. The Fairfield Inn accepts pets up to 40 pounds and charges a non-refundable $50 pet fee.

Good information! It is always needed to be known what to do with your animals. Not many people will take them in! I would also mention that it is important to have the animals in a kennel when possible. It is easy to know where the animals are and easily transportable.
