According to Fight Crime: Invest in Kids news release, one in five women are not having children or are waiting to have children due to the outrageous prices in child care.

A poll that was done by the anti-crime organization Fight Crime: Invest in Kids found that nearly 23 percent of women who are of child bearing age have decided to wait or have decided not to have a child due to the rising costs of child care. The 23 percent of women were between the ages of 18-40, and the figures rose to 28 percent with women who are between the ages of 25-34.

The poll that was conducted, was done by the Opinion Research Corporation by telephone and included 600 women. Among the findings were that for middle income women who make between $35,000 - $50,000 a year, one in three of the women stated that due to the rising cost of child care that it has made them decide not to have another child or to wait to have another child. It also determined that African American women, 40 percent have decided not to have a child for the same reason, and 33 percent of Hispanic women agreed.

85 percent of the 600 women that responded understand that high quality child care will cut crime, and it will reduce youth violence if all people had access to programs like the Head Start program.

Philadelphia District Attorney Lynn Abraham states "the high cost of child care and preschool are causing women to make agonizing decisions. We need to invest more to ensure access to quality child care and preschool for all American families and cut crime in the process. All members of Congress and all presidential candidates should put this program at the top of any list for full funding."

Members of the Fight Crime: Invest in Kids include over 3000 police chiefs, sheriffs, prosecutors and many other law enforcement leaders. The President of Fight Crime : Invest in Kids, stated that the recently revealed opinions of the women should be a wake up call for all members of Congress and the new presidential candidates.

I agree that childcare is something you should take into consideration, but I was 31 when I had my daughter, I hardly considered that waiting. Actually I am one of the youngest of my friends to have kids.

My daughter waited until she was 32. It does seem to be a trend. I don't think she's going to do it again, though.

That's why I'm a SAHM! :)

I suppose that for some, that is a valid reason not to have children. My mom always told me that if you wait until you can afford to have kids, you will never have them.

I actually don't think the cost of childcare is outrageous, of course, I'm a SAHM, so I've never had to pay childcare, but even the cost of doggie "daycare" is over $100 per week, so I'm not really sure what parents are expecting to pay when we're talking about actual human babies. For me delaying to have a child based on childcare costs wasn't an issue because I always wanted to stay home if I ever had kids.
