As many of us already know, diabetes and obesity are both very common, as well as increasing, problems in the United States. There are many reasons that medical professionals believe these problems are so common, including the large portion sizes which are high in fat that Americans consume and the low amount of physical activity that the average American takes part in. While these are just a few of the many reasons that are to blame, chances are that they probably make a lot of sense to you. What may not make sense to you is how plastic could be behind the increasingly common problem of both diabetes and obesity. Here, we will take a closer look at why plastic just be may be the culprit.

How Can Plastic Cause Diabetes and Obesity?

The main reason that plastic is believed to cause both diabetes and obesity is because of the residue from a toxic chemical called Bisphenol-A, otherwise known as BPA, which is released through plastic products and into foods or beverages. When a person is exposed to a large amount of BPA, they are believed to experience insulin resistance, which can ultimately lead to type II Diabetes. Plastic bags, containers and bottles all are known to be sources of BPA. Both tin cans and cardboard containers, such as those used for juice boxes, are also known to be primary sources of BPA.

What Other Conditions are Plastics Known to Cause?

There are other conditions which the BPA that is found in plastic is known to cause, aside from diabetes and obesity. Some of the many conditions which can occur after too much exposure to BPA include heart disease, kidney disease, eye disease, and arteriosclerosis. Of course, future studies may be able to either remove some of the conditions from this list - or increase the list with other conditions that BPA can cause.

Thanks for bringing this to my attention, Jody. It's worrying what could be lurking in everyday products that we use. Sophie
