A breed of lovebird that is almost always available for breeders are the masked lovebirds. Males and females of masked lovebirds are generally a soft, beautiful, light green color, and are quite small in size averaging up to only about 16 centimeters long. Their nape, throat and breast have a hint of light yellow mixed in with the soft greens. They will generally have a softer voice than the peach-face lovebirds when they become trusting of others.

Masked lovebirds are most commonly found in Northern Tanzania. They prefer to live in the grasslands of mimosa bushes, and acacias, and can be seen feeding on the grass, and berries near the riverbeds. If you ever happen to be in Northern Tanzania, you should generally be able to see a flock of around 30 near the riverbeds. They'll normally avoid the highlands though, but they are definitely a beautiful sight to see.

Mating these birds can be quite difficult though; however, it can be done! It is important to observe their behavior, personality, likes and dislikes - the more you know about them, the better, right? Next thing is to find out which ones are males and females (especially if you have more than one together). Males usually have a narrower eye ring than the females; females are generally by the nest box lining up to lay their eggs while the males generally don't make it there. However, differentiating between males and females can be quite difficult. I would advise you to have a professional already determine it for you. Once determined a pair, it is important to place them in a cage together. Never have more than a pair in a cage or else fights will break out.

For their nests, it is important to have a constant supply of willow twigs inside it because masked lovebirds need a large quantity of these to build their nests. Also, the willow twigs help provide some moisture that is extremely important during incubation.

Did You Know?
It is important to keep lovebirds in pairs in a cage; otherwise, fights will break out. Definitely not a pretty sight!

Masked lovebirds are a SPECIES of lovebird, not a breed. Proper terminology is important in aviculture. Otherwise, a decent article.
