Morehouse College is located in Atlanta, Georgia and is in all ways a southern school. But it it s southern school with a difference. Morehouse is a major University at which African Americans males make up not just a majority of the population, they make up the entire population. This allows students to come to Morehouse with an eye to education and development and with far less concern about racial side issues or the potential for racial injustice or conflict. How Morehouse Became a College. The history of Morehouse College, Atlanta, Georgia is a comparatively long one. The school began as a post Civil War institution in 1867 in Augusta , Georgia where its primary purpose was teach newly freed slaves how to read and write. In 1879 the school was moved to Atlanta and its purpose began to center more upon training black men for positions in ministry. Its name was changed too and it became Atlanta Baptist Seminary . When it began awarding degrees it morphed again to become Atlanta Baptist College. In 1913 it renamed itself one more time and took the title Morehouse College which it has remained to the current time.

While Morehouse experienced a lot of cosmetic changes during its long history , one thing remained constant. The goal of Morehouse was and is to prepare black men at the college level to be "academically superior, morally conscious leaders". To this end the college has been incredibly successful. Its graduates include men of the caliber of Civil Rights leaders such as Martin Luther King and Andrew Young and political leaders like Maynard Jackson , the first black mayor of Atlanta. Morehouse has attracted the interest and the support of the black community and given them an institution that is truly their own. Wealthy black celebrities like Oprah Winfrey and Spike Lee have made it a point to make very generous contributions to Morehouse College .
