Setting a dress code in the workplace will have various benefits to the employees as well as to the company. There is hardly a company or agency that exists without a dress code policy and the codes can range from casual to professional. Each setting, workplace, or department needs to have a dress code that fits for the needs of that working area. For example, childcare will have a more casual dress code because employees need to be able to sit on the floor, play, and may get dirty. In a multi-department company, those who work on a factory floor will need to wear comfortable clothes, sensible shoes, and possibly safety equipment such as helmets or gloves. However, employees in an office setting will need to dress professionally since they may be in the public eye or work with professionals from other businesses or in the community.
Having a dress code will ensure that everyone understands what is expected of them and allows protection for the business. For example, an employee might wear open-toed shoes and have a heavy object fall on their toe. Normally, a business would have to pay Workman's Compensation for this accident. With a dress code policy, the business will not be held liable if the employee chose to disregard the policy. But, hopefully, employees will adhere to the policy and accidents such as this will be prevented.
By having a policy that stipulates what is appropriate and inappropriate this will also ensure that the business and its employees can be free of some forms of sexual harassment or favoritism based on a provocative style of a person's clothes.
In order to maintain a professional appearance, or to be accepted in the community administrative positions or higher need to dress semi-formal, formal or dress-casual. Supervisors need to dress slightly better than their employees but still within a comfortable or safe realm befitting their work area.
