Hurricane season has long been considered a dangerous time. 120 mph winds is no laughing matter. Video footage has shown the incredible strength of a faceless giant. A giant that has claimed the lives and livelihoods of far too many. Whether you are a vacationer that has found yourself in a city under siege from the relentless torrent of rain and wind, or a local that is going through the drill yet another time, it is important to respond when you have the first indication of a storm. Here are some basic tips that can make your life a lot easier in the midst of a hurricane bearing down on your area.

Tip #1: Have a Plan.

(1) Know ahead of time where you will go if the storm heads in your direction. Know what is available to you. Every city has pre-determined shelters. Get a copy of the list from your Chamber of Commerce or the local television station. If you are on vacation, your hotel or resort should be able to help you find this list, as well as, the hotel procedures during a hurricane. If you have pets, make sure you find a shelter that accepts pets. They are out there, just not as many. (2) Set up with friends and relatives who/where your contact person will be should a storm hit. It is best to have a person out of the area be your "check-in" person. Phone lines are usually down, including cell phone towers. It could take several hours or days to get word to someone.

Tip #2: Don't Wait.
