Calling the clan for a gracious get-together? Rallying the relatives for a really good time? Young and old alike will want to participate, if you plan a worthwhile family reunion program in an enticing environment.
Every three years, my clan gathers for a family reunion. We have enjoyed 100 percent participation every time. With engagements, weddings, and new babies, the group grows each time.
Choosing an appropriate location for a sizable group can be challenging. Our family has enjoyed reunions at a South Seas resort, a woodsy cottage, a skyscraper hotel, a beach house, and even a church camp.
How can you select a super spot for your own family reunion? What considerations are important?
Start With the Map.
Faraway family members will appreciate your consideration, as you select a spot for your reunion. Take a map, and plot out where everyone lives.
Unless you are flying the whole crowd to Hawaii, the Virgin Islands, or some other exotic spot (so that everyone must fly), then you will want to find a location that is somewhat of a compromise for everyone. Try to split the travel times as evenly as you can between those who must journey the farthest.
Consider the abilities of various family members to travel significant distances. Perhaps your location will be somewhat determined by certain special needs of specific relatives. If Grandpa requires local medical care, you may be bound to his hometown. If Cousin Katie resides in a special-needs community, you might choose to plan a reunion within driving distance of that spot.
Timing Is Important.
Yearly seasons can play a major role in the success of your event. Consider the projected temperatures and weather for your target location. Unless your entire family loves winter sports, you will want to pick a date and site that will likely offer mild weather for outdoor activities.
Select Appropriate Accommodations.
Motels, hotels, and inns can be ideal spots for a gathering of your kin. Consider the specific needs of your group. Will you have seniors or very young children? Do you have any individuals with special-access needs?
