As you drive out of your driveway, the radio announcer reports a traffic jam on the interstate. Once you near the interstate, the report proves true: traffic is backed up beyond the ramp entrance; there is no sign that it will ever move. Already, the commute turns into a nightmare. You know there won't be any parking spaces available downtown, and you know you'll be very late to work. If you've ever experienced this scenario, you must have wondered if there is any other way to do it. Luckily, for residents of suburban Nashville, TN, an alternative now exists: the Music City Star commuter train.Making its inaugural run in September 2006, the Music City Star runs between downtown Nashville and Lebanon, TN along I-40, making stops in Donelson, Hermitage, Mount Juliet, and Martha. Stations are modern and clean, with many offering large park and ride lots. In downtown Nashville, two different shuttles ferry passengers between Riverfront station and several different employment locations, such as Vanderbilt.
Why take the train? There are countless benefits involved for those who make the choice to leave their cars behind. For many commuters who have made this choice, commuting has become less of a hassle, and for many, has resulted in extra time to read, relax, or work. Seated in recently refurbished bi-level "Gallery" coaches purchased from Chicago's Metra, one can actually enjoy the commute-instead of viewing it as a hassle.
Taking the Music City Star can even result in monetary savings! With gas prices climbing every day, monthly passes easily purchased online can save hundreds of dollars in gas and parking expenses. Single ride tickets can be purchased at Ticket Vending machines on all station platforms.
Leisure travelers and non-commuters can also use the Music City Star for trips to downtown Nashville. Trains run frequently in the mornings in afternoons, perfect for day trips or outings. Evening trains run Friday nights, allowing anyone to enjoy a dinner in one of the many downtown restaurants. Special service is provided to Titans games, and the station is located within walking distance of the stadium.
