The American Red Cross has began giving citizens in the track of Hurricane Dean as well as other citizens who generally are threatened by hurricanes during hurricane season some valuable tips and advice in order to stay safe when a hurricane is approaching.Often times when people here the word hurricane they panic. This is the worst thing that can be done. Going to the grocery store and buying everything on the shelf is not always going to save you. Sure you should always have the necessities on have such as milk, water, bread, and some food, but by simply having some knowledge about what you need to do and have for a hurricane, you should be all set to brace the bad weather.
Good thing we have the American Red Cross for this knowledge. The Red Cross stresses the need to stay close by with your neighbors during a hurricane. This is the most important way to save lives during bad weather. You should be informed about what neighbors you have that are elderly and which ones have disabilities, that way if electricity is lost you can help them out because they will need it. Also, arrange back up plans if you have children. You never know what would happen if you were at the store or at work and could not make it home before a storm approached. Have a plan for a neighbor that you are closer to that would be able to watch your children until you safely make it home.
Another important task before a hurricane occurs is to get a safety kit. This kit should be small, easy to handle, water resistant, as well as portable so whether you are asked to stay at home or evacuate you will always be able to have it by your side. You should be able to fit enough items in this kit for three days if needed. Besides this kit, the Red Cross also recommends you have at least two weeks of food supplies in your house. No this does not mean by the whole grocery store. Most people should have this in their house already.
