Everyone has pretty much heard of sharks. The great white shark in the movie Jaws scared a lot of people and gave a newfound respect for nature to others. The great white is just one of many varieties of shark. One variety of sharks is the Salmon Shark. You might have guessed the reason why it came to be called by this name. Its favorite fish to feast on is Salmon. Salmon sharks share the same class of mackerel as its brethren the great white and fellow members the makos. They can weigh between 300 to 700 pounds, which makes it a fairly big fish and that means it has a big appetite. If you add their speed capability of 50 plus miles its easy to see why they can eat up around 12 to 25 percent of salmon during commercial fishing season, which makes a lot of commercial fishermen very unhappy mainly because they don't want the sharks eating up their livelihood.
Compared with other sharks, salmon sharks can swim in colder waters. Call them hot natured if you want. If a salmon shark is swimming in waters of 50 degrees their body temperature can raise to a comfortable level of 74.5 degrees. If they were swimming in waters of 30 degrees their body temperature would raise to 54.5 degrees, a chilly but better than the icy 30 degrees.
Salmon sharks are rapidly becoming the objects of many fishing expeditions. A popular fishing ground is in Alaska and you can even book fishing guides to take you out on the waters. If you've never fished for salmon sharks its probably best to book a guide because the sharks will put up a fight and there's a possibility you could get hurt especially if fly rod fishing is involved. By now you may be scratching you're head and saying "fly rod fishing for a shark" and mumbling the word "what?" Sounds crazy doesn't it, but that's what is putting the word sport back in fishing.
