Americans today are being educated in the health benefits of taking multivitamins. Multivitamins are essential to supplement the unbalanced daily intake of the pyramid of food requirements that have been set up by the USDA. www.mypyramid.gov/. It is a natural trend that is hitting the markets today but have been studied and practiced for years in China. Which supplement should be taken?

The last ten or so years have passed since my first visit to a natural foods store. Coming from a smaller city in the Midwest, there was no opportunity for a healthy supplement foundation to educate my young mind due to no available local resources. After entering into a large university though my eyes was open to the large industry that was clearly new to me. Through some fantastic raw vegan and vegetarian friends, along with an abundance of resources, I have become a self-proclaimed health expert. My husband prefers to call me a health-freak, oh well. My education is self-taught and university taught.

One of the first suggestions I was given by a new general practitioner was to start taking a multivitamin daily. After a stage of confusion my raw vegan friend suggested going on a voyage to the health food store that he worked in. He suggested I go on his day off so I could have his full attention and enough time to find the perfect multivitamin.

As we drove up to the health food store I laughed because the store was so small, I knew I would be finished in five minutes flat. How long could it take? Astonished we walked into the store with millions of supplement bottles leering down upon me. Today there are even more options to choose from these natural stores, it is hard to be a beginner and choose just one pill. There are some things to be picky on though when choosing, so here are some tips to help you out.

Tip #1: Shop at a natural food store: Yes, there are multivitamins at an ordinary grocery store however these usually are not 100% natural. Health food store vitamins will contain no sugars, artificial coloring, allergenic fillers (such as lactose) and are much more potent than drugstore brands.

Did You Know?
We don't have to take handfuls of pills each day to keep healthy, just purchase one good multivitamin.

Very good information. I buy a lot of supplements and an excellent vegetarian multi. It adds up each month but I think it's work it:)

Good article! One thing also to be aware of is that many inexpensive multivitamins have binders and fillers. While the amount of vitamins might be accurate, if the pills take too long in the stomach to dissolve, they will end up passing through the colon before they are in the right state to be absorbed. So while there might be, (just as an example) 1000mg of Vitamin C, you might only be getting be 250mg because the body hasn't had a chance to completely break down the pills. Isotonic vitamins are good. You mix them with water and they are immediately passed through and absorbed in the body. You will get a good 90% or more of the stated nutrition on the labels. Dave

I agree about being aware of the price. I often buy the cheaper vitamins and they work just as well as the more expensive ones.
