After trying Ragu's Organic Pasta Sauce and being sadly disappointed I decided to give Prego Organic Tomato and Basil Italian Sauce a try. The front of the jar touts that it is 100% natural and a 1 pound 9 ounce jar costs $2.99. The price is reasonable considering that it is made of all organic ingredients. The ingredients are as follows: organic tomato puree, diced organic tomatoes in organic tomato juice, organic canola oil, organic sugar, salt, organic onion powder, dehydrated organic garlic, organic basil, citric acid, dehydrated organic parsley, organic oregano, organic spice and organic flavoring. A ½ cup serving has 90 calories, 2 grams of protein, 2.5 grams of fat, 4 grams of fiber, 11 grams of sugar, 540 milligrams of sodium, and 15 grams of carbohydrates. It also claims that a serving of this sauce provides 30% of the daily vegetables recommended by the USDA MyPyramid.
The first thing that I noticed about the sauce was that it was nice and thick, just like we like it. It had a wonderful Italian sauce smell and appeared very fresh. I mixed it in with 1 pound of browned organic ground beef and simmered it. I did not add any additional salt, seasonings, or spices so that I could fairly judge the flavor that it offered in its original state. I placed it over spiral vegetable rotini pasta and served it to my family.
The children gobbled it down and had no complaints whatsoever about the taste. My husband (who is quite the food critic) enjoyed the taste of the Prego Organic Tomato and Basil Italian Sauce. I must say that it had just the right amount of spices and a tangy tomato taste that was not overwhelming. The consistency of the Prego Organic Tomato and Basil Italian Sauce was perfect. It was not runny and it clung to the pasta, giving it a fulfilling and bold Italian taste.
