Who likes lawyers? Jokes about mercenary lawyers are seemingly endless, but as with all things, there are bad lawyers - there are good lawyers and the bottom line is this: you cannot adopt a baby without a lawyer. So, let's dive in and see how to find the right lawyer to assist you in adopting the baby or child that is waiting just for you.First of all, adoption falls under Family Law and is governed by each individual state. You can easily find a list of adoption lawyers by going to any major search engine on the Internet and searching "state adoption lawyer" (replacing "state" with your state's name). You can also look in your local phone book under "attorneys - family law."
When finding an adoption lawyer, it is helpful to do several things:
*Make a list of questions that you have
*Interview several adoption lawyers
*Get recommendations from people who have been through the adoption process
*Don't be afraid to change lawyers if the relationship is not working
*Find a lawyer that can handle the type of adoption you want
Before you contact an adoption lawyer, take time to make a list of questions that you have about adoption. Do not be intimidated - if it's important to you, it should be important to your lawyer. This is a life-changing move that you are making so no question is stupid. If the lawyer acts as if it is, that is your clue to move on to another lawyer.
Talk to several lawyers before you make a decision as to which lawyer to choose. Every one thinks that their adoption lawyer was the perfect one when in truth; there is no perfect lawyer, just the perfect one for your family. When choosing the right lawyer, make sure that it is the right fit for you, that you are comfortable, your questions are answered and treated with respect, and there is open and comfortable communication between you and the lawyer.
A good way to find a competent and experienced adoption lawyer is often through recommendations from people who have been through the adoption experience. Ask around and you will find adoptive families who will be happy to share their experience with you and why they did or did not like their lawyer.
