Research, Research, ResearchPreparation for the season is the number one thing within an owner's control. Know all the players with current or potential fantasy value. Not just the starters for your favorite team, but the back-ups for all 32 teams. Research coaching changes and how that will impact the team's offensive production. Know every team's depth chart by heart, so you can handcuff running backs in the draft and spend every pick on a player that has the potential to help your fantasy team, if only for one week as a substitute. Project statistics for every player and do mock drafts with you as the owner of every team in the league. You will learn how to succeed from every draft position and with a lot of variables.
Draft For Value
You can't win your league in the first couple rounds of the fantasy football draft, but you can certainly lose it. Drafting a risky running back, a hold out, or going against the grain with a top wide receiver or tight end is not the way to play the odds. Taking solid, productive players in the first two rounds will keep you even with most owners in the league (except for the few who already lost) and allow you to win the league in round 3 and beyond. Research where players are being taken, whether ESPN.com or CBS.com, so you can anticipate where a player is taken. By comparing to your personal rankings, you can identify value players that you can draft 2-3 rounds after you have them ranked. Draft players with high skill in the final few rounds, where they could play a significant role in your playoff run if given the opportunity. Rather than drafting an aging veteran whose skills have eroded and will be average at best if two players go down with injuries, take a player with upside.
