Since time immemorial stones and rocks have been used by cunning folk for many different reasons. Being used as protective charms and amulets are only a couple of uses. Because of the vast list of these protective stones, only a few will be discussed in this article. These stones tend to be readily available and relatively cheap to purchase.

Among some of the more uncommon protective stones are Chrysoprase, lepidolite, and staurolite. While stones like amber, carnelian, citrine, quartz crystal, jade, onyx, and tiger's-eye, make up a very short list of the more common ones.

Of the more common stones, the most expensive will be amber. Finding real amber is a treat because on occasion, this fossilized tree sap contains perfectly preserved ancient bugs that became trapped.

When utilized for protection, amber is effective in neutralizing negativity. It is also reported to be a wonderful safeguard for the health of children, if given to as a piece of jewelry or placed in their bedroom.

Carnelian is a red or orange form of chalcedony. It has been used throughout the centuries as magical protection. For centuries it has been thought to protect against others who might try to read ones thoughts.

If placed in the home, it is also thought to protect it from being struck by lightning or being hit by a devastating storm. Carnelian is also believed to protect the wearer (or household) from unwanted or unsavory enchantments.

Citrine is a beautiful yellow-gold stone that protects the wearer from himself. This protective stone not only prevents nightmares, but removes fear at night, when placed in the bedroom.

It also has the ability to remove self-doubt and alleviate depression because of its effect on the wearer's mental clarity. Because of this effect, citrine can also diminish irrational mood-swings.

The citrine claims are unusual. :) How come every parent of a four year old doesn't decorate the kid's bedroom in it?
