Finding drug addiction help for a teen must be one of the most heartbreaking tasks a parent ever takes on. With the psychological state of teens being what it is, many parents must often feel at the end of their ropes when it comes to dealing with the pressures of having teenage children. With drug addiction, treatment is a difficult option to consider for a teen because of the multi-faceted aspects of addiction in someone so young.

The treatment must be, first and foremost, specialized to the needs of the teen. Drug rehab works well in many cases, but it may not be the best option for a teenager. Make sure that you look for treatment options that are specifically designed for teens and that offer therapy in group settings with other children so that the teen will have a sense of belonging.

Of special concern to parents of teenagers with a drug addiction problem is the issue of schooling. Many teens who have a drug addiction problem have dropped out of school or missed so much school that they have been suspended or expelled. In drug rehab centers, teens will be required to attend school. The quality of academic education varies between programs, but your teenager will attend classes. A drug rehab center's schedule is tight, incorporating academic classes along with psycho-educational classes, group therapy, private counseling and other activities.

Parents should expect to be very involved with their teen's drug addiction help, whether the teenager is in inpatient drug rehab or outpatient counseling. Family sessions are required by many facilities and highly recommended by others. While it is certainly not your "fault" that your teenager has a drug addiction problem, family dynamics may play a contributing factor in the underlying causes. Additionally, you and your teenager have probably grown apart and may fight frequently. Your faithful attendance at family sessions will show your teen that you love and care for him or her and are willing to commit to the teen's recovery effort.
