Many people remember the chaos they saw on the roads on their local news with the hurricanes in the past several years. Others lived through it. So you don't have to suffer some of those same heartaches that others did, Shell Oil Products has issued tips for your car. In a recent press release, Shell Oil Products US included tips for drivers that live in areas where there is potential for a hurricane to affect their area. One of the biggest tips they suggest is to prepare ahead of time instead of waiting until the last minute, but there are many others and they also offer ways to prepare.

One way to be prepared is make sure your car always has at least half a tank of gas during hurricane season if you live in an area that is at risk of being affected by a Hurricane. This way you will not fall victim to possible gasoline shortages as a storm approaches, or have to pay increased costs. They also suggest if a storm enters the Gulf of Mexico to keep your car's gas tank very close to full for the same reasons.

There are several other ways in the press release to prepare as well. One is to make sure you design your own escape route, and be familiar with where you need to travel. Keep an ear on radio broadcasts while driving though for possible road closures or traffic backups. After preparing your escape route, make sure you fill up you gas tank early. This will help you avoid long lines for gas, or having to stop in the middle of your trip along your escape route.

Other tips focus on getting the most out of your tank of gasoline. One tip is to replace dirty or clogged air filters. The press release indicates that a clean air filter can extend your mileage on a tank of gasoline by close to ten percent. While not as big an increase in fuel efficiency, keeping your tires inflated to the correct pressure can save you about three percent of fuel efficiency in your tank according to the press release. One final tip is to use the oil suggested for your car, improper types of oil might cost you as one or two percent of fuel efficiency on your mileage total for your tank. These tips combined can save you fifteen percent on your fuel efficiency which is a significant amount.
