The American Humane Association has given the Alexander County Animal Control Facility in Taylorsville, North Carolina, a grant of $4000 to improve the condition of the shelter that is part of the Meacham Foundation Memorial Grant.

The Alexander County Animal Control Facility that is located at 116 Waggin' Trail in Taylorsville, North Carolina has been given a grant of $4000 by the American Humane Association that will allow the facility to install new, more feline friendly cattery at the shelter that will separate the cats from the dogs.

At the current time, the shelter has the cats and the dogs in the same area. The employees at the Alexander County Animal Control Facility believe that due to these conditions, the cats are stressed out by the barking dogs and become less adoptable to people who are willing to adopt. With this money given to them, the cats will now be able to run around and jump, and potential people that want to adopt the cats will be able to view them through a large viewing window that will be placed at the front of the room.

Debrah Schnackenberg, the Vice President of Animal Protection Services, states that the "American Humane is proud to help fund this project, Alexander County Animal Control is making great strides in improving the welfare of animals in its community. The cats will have a better experience while staying at the shelter, and a better chance at finding a permanent home as well".

The Alexander County Animal Control which is under new administration is focusing more on adopting animals than euthanasia. As a matter of fact, the amount of animals that have been euthanized has dropped an enormous amount since 2006. Employees of the animal facility believe that with this grant that the amount will drop even more when the facility is redone.

My Daughter works for the Montgomery County Humane Society. I hope more and more money goes to the better care of our outcast doggies and kitties (bunnies, hamsters, turtles, and all other pets).

Good for the kitties, I bet they are stressed out.

That's good news! The euthanasia rates here have gone up because of the poor condition of the shelter. The animals are sick. They don't get adopted because of it and other shelters are refusing to take them.
