Gone are the days of Senior Citizen Centers consisting of little more than rocking chairs and bingo. Present day Centers are filled with people living life and having fun doing a wide variety of activities.

Our local Center offers a weight room, pool table room, computer room, small library, quilting, ceramics classes, card tables, and puzzle piecing area. The Center also offers weekly local outings for free and monthly out of town trips at discounted prices. Combine that with local guest speakers, singers, nurses, and an occasional politician coming by, and you have a full plate. Speaking of plates, the Center also offers delicious hot lunches, cooked on the premises, for a nominal price. Folks that don't want to eat in the large dining facility, or just want to drop in to get lunch, can get a to-go plate.

The Senior Citizens Center is not just a place to go because you don't have anywhere else to go, or nothing else to do, it is a place to go to live, learn and laugh. You don't have to wait until age 65 to go, 50 and over are welcomed to come.

You will even find those younger than 50 there. Those that have broken the law in some way and have been assigned a number of hours of Community Service as part of their sentence will be found there, working off their hours. Those young offenders probably don't realize how blessed they are to have the opportunity to be surrounded by older, wiser seniors. If the young will listen to the wisdom of the old, they won't be repeat offenders.

Transit buses will come to your home, pick you up and deliver you to the center daily. The bus will return you home after lunch with a smiling face and a full belly. Free of charge, that is a good price for seniors.

The Center does have rocking chairs for those that wish to rock. The Center does have games of bingo, token prizes are given to the winners of bingo.

Senior Citizen Centers are places to go for people who have a lot of living yet to do, not places to go and wait to die.

I agree with the sentiments expressed in your article. My husband and I retired last year, relocated to Georgia and promptly became active in our nearby senior center. You have my vote! Enjoy your writings.
